STUDY 41 – CHRIST’S TRIUMPHANT ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM

John 12:12-19; Mark 15:9,10; Acts 13:45; 17:4-6; 1 Corinthians 3:3;

Galatians 5:19-21; James 3:14-16; 1 Peter 2:1

This very short and significant passage on the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, John 12:12-15, was recorded also by Matthew, Mark and Luke. John’s record was very brief because the other gospels had written about this a long time before he wrote his own Gospel, and had given us detailed account of all the things that were done and said, and Jesus Christ then entered triumphantly into Jerusalem (as He is going to enter triumphantly into your heart, and into your family and our Church in Jesus Name). When it took place, much people were there. “On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, (John 12:12). These were the people who came for the feast of the Passover. Some of them were there when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, others had heard. They took branches of palm trees in their hands and spread their clothes for Jesus to ride triumphantly into Jerusalem.

You may be asking why John was writing this story again. It was to add details that were not recorded in Matthew, Mark and Luke. The triumphant entry into Jerusalem happened after the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead, which the other gospels did not record.

The Nation of Israel had no excuse recognizing that Jesus was the Messiah, because what He did no other person or prophet had ever done. Moses, Joshua, David did not, and Elijah and Elisha did not perform the kinds of miracles Jesus Christ performed. Jesus turned water into wine; with a single word of power and authority raised up the impotent man that had been paralyzed for 38 years; to the woman caught in adultery He said, “neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more”, no man ever spoke like that. The man born blind over 40years old, had clay put of his eyes and asked to go wash in a pool and came back seeing. These had never happened with anyone before. Then the climax came, when He raised Lazarus who had been dead for four days from the dead. After this came the feast of the Passover and the people said, I must see Jesus, the Messiah, the King; they recognized Him as the Christ. (He is appearing to you today and blessing your life; and as you believe in Him, it will be a wonderful experience in your life in Jesus Name.)

“These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him” (John 12:16). What a pity and a great tragedy that His disciples, who had followed him everywhere, and had seen him perform great miracles with power and authority, did not understand what they were seeing. (I pray God will give you understanding.) There was one of them, Judas Iscariot, he saw all the miracles of Christ, heard all His teachings and inspirations, ate miracle food, and yet he did not understand, though seeing what was written about Jesus fulfilled. Eventually he betrayed the Lord Jesus, and went to Hell fire. (I pray that will not happen to you in Jesus name.) These other disciples didn’t understand but remembered when Christ was glorified. As Christ is glorified in your life and talks to you by His Spirit when you have a challenge, a trial, or are at a crossroad, that is when you remember, and what you remember will do good in your life.

There are other people, the Pharisees – separatists and religious people; outwardly they appeared correct, but inwardly they did not have the right heart towards Jesus Christ. There are people like them today, separatists, who claim not to do what others do, but they don’t have salvation, nor an inner change or inner transformation. “The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him” (John 12:19). Instead of rejoicing that people were getting saved through Jesus, they were envious of Him, and that envy drove them to eventually kill Him – Mark 15:9,10. When there is envy in your life, you will do things you shouldn’t do, say things you shouldn’t say, and there will be hatred. “But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming” (Acts 13:45). This is what envy does. Paul went everywhere preaching the gospel of salvation and liberation, bringing people out of darkness into light, but because they had not received, were not saved nor transformed, they were filled with envy. If there is envy in the heart, there cannot be salvation there. Envy is an evil thing and I pray that God will set us free. There are people who, when something good is happening and wise people are repenting and getting saved, they are moved with envy, jealousy and carnal competition (Acts 17:4-6). (I pray there will be no envy or jealousy in your heart, for this can break your relationship with the Lord and send you where you do not want to go. You will not die with envy, jealous or anger in your heart in Jesus name.) If envy, strife, jealousy are there, you are carnal (1 Corinthians 3:3; Galatians 5:19-21) and you walk as natural men. If you die with envy in your heart, you will not inherit the kingdom of God. I pray that the blood of Jesus will cleanse and set us free from all these envying and jealousy in the heart. Envy is bitter, makes you bitter, angry, sad over the progress and success of others; and you leak out of the blessing of God. “Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings” (1 Peter 2:1). If any of these is in your heart, dig it out. The Pharisees never considered their own salvation but were full of envy because Jesus was drawing much people. “The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? Behold, the world is gone after him.”(John 12:19) He is King of kings, Lord and lords, higher that all the Pharisees and He will be glorified in your life, in my and in our Church in Jesus Name.

3 points;

Point 1. The Admiration of the Long Awaited King

John 12:12,13; Genesis 49:10-11; Numbers 24:17,19; Psalms 118:25,26; 110:1,2; Isaiah 9:6,7; Daniel 7:13,14; Revelations 19:16

“On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.” (John 12:12,13). He is King. The Lord had commanded the children of Israel concerning this feast of the Passover. They were to gather from all parts of the nation to a place He chose for them. It is to their credit and worthy of emulation, that after decades and centuries, they kept on coming faithfully. {There are people who don’t come regularly to our weekly meetings and programmes, giving flimsy excuses, but I pray that we are going to serve the Lord fervently in this New Year. No more lukewarmness and coldness, we are going to serve the Lord.} Christ is the long-awaited King. The Father testified about Him, the Author, the Holy Spirit wrote concerning Him, and even John the Baptist spoke concerning Jesus that this is the King. His miracles have also provided credentials and evidence that this is the King, and the people now fully yielded to fulfill Scriptures that Jesus Christ is the King. It had been prophesied. “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be” (Genesis 49:10). Until Shiloh (Shiloh is the title of the King) come, until the Exalted One, the Expected One, the Reigning One comes. And unto Him shall the gathering of the people be. That was what was fulfilled in John 12:12, even way back in Genesis and other Old Testament verses. He will be the King, and the people shall recognise Him as the King of kings and give Him admiration. I pray that as others have recognized Him, you will recognize Him as the King, Authority, Control, Director, Lord and Master of your life in Jesus name. “Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity” (Psalms 118:25). (The word ‘Hosanna’ means ‘save us now’). As He comes into your life, freedom, dominion, abundance and prosperity will come. Here is the One that the Father Almighty has established to be the King, the Exalted One (Psalms 2:6-8). So He is telling us that it is not only the House of Israel that should say hosanna, blessed is He that cometh in the Name of the Lord, but that those of us in the uttermost part of the earth, that as we are reading the Scriptures now, we need to say the same thing; hosanna – save us now, save us from our sins and the consequences of sin, and then we make Him the King of our lives. I pray it will be fulfilled in your life in Jesus Name.

“Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession” (Psalms 2:8). This was the prophecy concerning Christ. But now, we are the hands, feet, mouths, representatives, messengers and ambassadors of Christ, that we are claiming this same promise, to claim the earth for the Lord. I pray the Lord will bring people into His kingdom, and He will do it through you. But you need to go out and preach the gospel to every creature and the promise will be fulfilled in your life. “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool” (Psalms 110:1). He is going to conquer and suppress all enemies and the rebellious ones as well. Christ is the King and Lord, and He is going to rule in the hearts of the people. Isaiah 9:6,7. He is going to have an everlasting dominion and kingship. His kingdom will not come to an end. Daniel 7:13,14. That’s Jesus, my Saviour, Lord, and the Captain of my Salvation. When you hand over your life to Him, He lives as King, He directs, and controls your life, every step of you take, every word you speak, every plan you have, every direction you go, He continues to guide you because you have allowed Him to be the King of kings and the Lord of lords in your life. He will rule in your life without a rival in Jesus Name. Money and the world will not be rivals to the Lord in your life in Jesus Name. Up, up Jesus and down, down every other thing that is trying to rival the authority of Christ in your life. Put them down, and Christ will reign in your life in Jesus Name. Enemies, friends, Satan, demons, society will not control your life. Christ will be King and Lord over your spirit, soul and over your life, and you will be able to say that He controls and directs everything you do or say. “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Revelation 19:16). That is what the multitudes realised and recognised Christ as this long awaited King and “Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord” (John 12:13).

Point 2. The Adoration of the Lowly Acknowledged King

John 12:14-15; Zechariah 9:9; Psalms 45:6,7; Isaiah 42:1-4; Luke 19:35-38,41; Matthew 23:37-39

“And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written” (John 12:14). Have you noticed that in the life of Jesus, He did everything as it is written. He fulfilled prophecies, overcame temptations, worked His miracles, and did His ministry as it is written. What an example for you and for me that every step you take, everything you do and say, decisions you make in your life, and your character and behaviour are as it is written. That is how we live righteously. If we live contrary to the word of God, act and behave contrary to what is written in the word of God, we are sinning, doing evil. But righteousness comes and holiness is manifested when we do, live, act, behave, pray and follow the guidance of the Lord as it is written. “Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt” (John 12:15). This is what has been written about 500 years before the coming of the Lord. This is what shows us that the Bible is actually the word of God. Zechariah 9:9. As it is written and fulfilled concerning the Lord, so it will be fulfilled about you. All that is written concerning you in the word of God will be fulfilled. The King your Saviour, Sanctifier, He is coming unto you. And it was fulfilled exactly as it was written. This is what gives us assurance that whatever is written in the word of God concerning you will be fulfilled. The promise of salvation, healing shall be fulfilled as it is written in Jesus Name. “Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows” (Psalms 45:7). You see here that He is exalted. There is no man, no prophet, no priest, and no angel like Jesus. He is above them all. He will reign in your life. Let Jesus reign over your life, heart, family, work, and your life will please the Lord in Jesus Name. He is going to rule and reign over the whole earth. He has been exalted, and I pray that this exaltation will be fulfilled in every life in Jesus Name.

“These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him” (John 12:16). Jesus is King, the Saviour is Lord, the Sanctifier, the Deliverer, they did not understand fully. And it is what we understand that is going to give us the victory. And I pray that you will understand. The Nature, power, and preeminence of Jesus you will understand. That Christ is exalted. Instead of praying save from sins, and the consequences of sins, they were only praying for limited salvation from political rule and power, the Romans government. The nation did not understand, and because they did not understand, He had entered triumphantly, but He exited tearfully (Luke 19:35-38,41,42). “And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes.” (Luke 19:41-42) They did not understand; they rejected the salvation He had brought. The Saviour was near, and they were not saved. The Deliverer was near, and they were not delivered. The King of kings was near, and they did not allow Him to rule over them. He wanted to save them but they were not saved. He wanted to deliver them, but they were not delivered. The Saviour was near but they were to be obedient unto Him. What they said with their mouth they did not believe in their hearts. If you know Him as King and Lord, you will submit yourself to be obedient unto Him. He will rule in your life in Jesus Name.

Point 3. The Admission concerning the Loudly Acclaimed King

John 12:17-19; Psalms 145:6,7; Acts 5:27-29; Psalms 22:27,1,8,16,27; 72:8,11; 86:9

Many people went and they believed on Him, and thank God, you are one of the people that believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. He will take your sins away, forgive you of your sins, and give you the power to live above sin, and live the victorious life in Jesus Name. But you have to forsake every other allegiance to any other king or power in a practical and definite way. “They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness” (Psalms 145:7). That is what the people were doing, and we are going to join them. We are going to sing His praise. We are going to admit publicly that this is the King and Lord, and nothing will shut up your mouth in Jesus Name. Acts 5:27-29. This is what the Pharisees, religious people will always want to do, to shut up your mouth not to preach about Jesus, but they will not succeed. When are we going to fill our city with Christ Jesus the Saviour? It will happen this year. They will try to shut your mouth, but…..We (I) ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). He is the Ruler, Messiah of everyone, and we need to go and tell them. Psalms 22:27. All the ends of the world, your city, region, state, country, local government, community will turn to the Lord. We shall remember..Calvary, His sacrifice, then they will turn to the Lord. You will be a witness for the Lord, a preacher of the gospel, and you will turn multitudes unto the Lord in Jesus Name. “Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him” (Psalms 72:11). You will tell the kings, highly placed people and they will give adoration and worship the Lord Jesus Christ. But if we don’t tell them, how will they know and worship Him. But I will tell them and this prophesy shall be fulfilled in Jesus name. “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be” (Genesis 49:10). Go and tell them that Jesus is King and Lord, and as you go and tell them, you will help the fulfillment of this prophecy of the Lord in Jesus Name. Go and tell them.

Ponder on this! When you hand over your life to Him, He lives as King, He directs, and controls your life. Every step you take, every word you speak, every plan you have, every direction you go, He continues to guide you because you have allowed Him to be the King of kings and the Lord of lords in your life. He will rule in your life without a rival in Jesus Name. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.

Reflection – The Saviour was near, and they were not saved. The Deliverer was near, and they were not delivered. The King of kings was near, and they did not allow Him to rule over them. Pastor (Dr) W.F Kumuyi.
